Review of Barton Fink (1991) by Delarme L — 27 Nov 2008
For me, this claustrophobic existential nightmare is the quintessential Coen brothers' movie: Obtuse, surreal, absurd, and weirdly unsettling. Turturro's self-righteous Man of the People becomes spectacularly unraveled during a wicked bout of writer's block, but John Goodman and the other supporting characters--including John Mahoney as a whiskey-soaked has-been and Judy Davis as his frayed assistant--nearly steal the show.
Barton's purgatorial hotel room and the parade of LA sharks and shysters he encounters vividly depict a Hollywood that's rotten from the inside out, and totally out of touch with it's supposed audience; you can almost smell the desperation and decay.
