Review of Barton Fink (1991) by Darryl J — 06 Jan 2009
A movie riddled with symbolism. You can nitpick through this film and find instance after instance of little inside jokes and references that the Coen bros. have littered in this. It shows their knowledge of film and their innovation to pay tribute to them without totally being some overblown homage.
I enjoyed how genre-less this was. It has elements of film noir, surrealism,a dark comedy, etc. The list goes on and on. John Turturro was the perfect choice to play the sort of strung out and manic playwright.
John Goodman has surprised me once again. Are the Coens the only ones to really bring out his amazing acting talent? Though I recognize the themes and symbolism of the film,I was not rocked by them. It may be a case for the never ending argument of style over substance but who really cares when the Coens style is so fucking great.
