Review of Barton Fink (1991) by Daniel W — 30 Aug 2009
Wonderful early Coen Brothers story. Turturro's Fink tries to make it in Tinseltown, but gets classically tripped up. He does fine, but I still like him better in smaller character roles. Goodman is ok as well, but I could've used more depth from such a pivotal character.
The story is what drives this. Lovely nuances abound, the close-ups on the typewritten page, the girl on the wall, the Bible changing its verses before our eyes. Hey, and if you're a Monk fan, you MUST see his small scene as a producer.
A 1991 era slimmed down Tony Shalhoub delivers a tour de force in perfect Regis-ese. A confectionery delight!
