Review of Barton Fink (1991) by Gordon S — 18 Dec 2010
Along with the recent A SERIOUS MAN, maybe the most arty and esoteric Coen Brothers film. Very good film on the writing life that gets richer with multiple viewings--Barton Fink (Turturro) is a how-to on how NOT to be as a creative screenwriter: unobservant, self-centered, and suprisingly uncreative when "the chips are down.
" Also, some great satirical stabs at the old Hollywood studio system, and a funny potshot at William Faulkner with a terrific drunken performance by John Mahoney as a famous author who may not be writing the screenplays he's credited for.
"I'll show you the life of the mind!".
