Review of Barton Fink (1991) by Tim E — 23 Aug 2014
An exceptional movie capturing the writing process, a yearning for something true and beautiful, and the contrast between writing independently in New York and writing for the motion picture industry in LA.
It's not just a thriller, not just an observational Hollywood piece. The Coens are, as always, notoriously brilliant for transcending any genre, going above and beyond it. Barton Fink is a highly likable character, which is one of the many things that makes this film work.
Any person in the audience can relate with this film in some way: with the madcap lunacy going on around Barton, with the yearning to do something great, with the desire to be blissfully unencumbered and inspired when producing art.
Well done, Coen brothers. Well done.
