Review of Barton Fink (1991) by Tim G — 27 Oct 2009
One of my favorite coen movies of all. Its also one of those movies that makes your head hurt after watching it and trying to figure out what that movie was about.
First of all there its hard to find things that don't work in this movie, the plot is great even though its confusing. The costumes work great, Barton and charlie are always dressed in darker cloths usually causal when seen together. Love how Charlie is always sweating in the hotel, the way the characters are portrayed big hollywood producers are full of them selves they think they rule the world, they try to satisfy each of their workers, but they hold on them on a short leash one mess up and they are done for. I could go on all day everything seems to work to the the coen's intent, which seems to have to do something with hollywood and how writters are treated in hollywood and how hollywood has become to "hollywood".
As it seems noone can get a clear understanding on what the meaning of this movie is all about. I think this is all a representation of barton's mind, and how he is slowly going crazy in a since. I think the hotel he is living in represents his mind. There are 3 major characters/objects in this hotel. First we Have barton of course main Character, suffering from writers block. Then we have charlie, Bartons strange and homicidal nieghbor. Then we have much less seen in this but very much important to this story, is the picture of the women looking out to sea. Not really sure what this all means but I think it has to do with Bartons mind and how he is slowly going crazy but this picture women or what ever is a tie to normalcy. going to watch this a couple more times to try and get more out of it, may add some if I can later.
