Review of Barton Fink (1991) by Blackity B — 19 Sep 2009
For the most part, I thought this was brilliant. Weaves you into the story and gets you inside the writer's mind. As each twist and turn becomes more unbelievable, you start guessing where exactly it has crossed over into Fink's imagination, and how much or if anything was real. Almost every scene though had a level of genius to it and was fascinating both thematically and visually.
Only thing that brought it down was that at the end it had nowhere to go. On one hand the ominous ending was fitting, but on the other it was like the Coens just threw together something weird because even they couldn't find what to tie the story up with. You could tell they came up with this during a writer's block. At the end they may have hit that brick wall again, but the journey to it was very, very interesting.
