Review of Bart Got a Room (2008) by Mark B — 14 Feb 2010
I'm sure the brainpower behind this film thought everything was in place to pull off another cute teen movie with a moral message behind it, and maybe make a few million while they were at it. I can see where they were going with this one, but there is one huge problem. The funny scenes aren't funny.
They went through the trouble of enlisting the help of a few accomplished actors. You can do worse than William H. Macy and Cheryl Hines, she of "Curb Your Enthusiasm." And the rest of the cast seems adept enough. But virtually every instance a scene appears to be orchestrated for laughs, the script and actors fail to deliver.
There are some healthy messages, and the film is fairly harmless when compared to the toxic level of other such movies. But the comedy falls flat, and that's a difficult thing for a teen comedy to overcome.
