Review of Barry Lyndon (1975) by Michelle W — 22 Aug 2009
Barry Lyndon is Kubrick's period film about Redmond Barry who wants nothing more than to be part of English nobility.
Barry was obsessed with what he must have thought to be the beauty and the glamour of class, and this film is absolutely gorgeous. It conveys so strongly the gorgeousity of the aristocracy you want to be a part of it just as much as he does. Every scene looked like it came from an oil painting, Kubrick takes his visual stlye of a whole other level.
Perhaps Kubrick took it a little too far as the beauty obviously took precedence over everything else and other aspects felt neglected in comparision.
A sublimely gorgeous film by Kubrick, not my favourite but what could possibly top 2001?
