Review of Barry Lyndon (1975) by Edgar C — 20 Jul 2010
Perfect in every sense of the word. Barry Lyndon went against all odds, but Kubrick one day sat down and thought: "what is the genre I haven't yet treated?", and he thought of a costume drama. Well, he is one of the few filmmakers that has made better films than their original literary sources. Kubrick's unmistakable trademark style is present throughout, and all the romantic, existentialist, dramatic, tragic, poetic, elegant and luscious elements found in Thackeray's novel were not left out. The result, as always, is a gigantic triumph.
99/100.
