Review of Barry Lyndon (1975) by Daniel A — 07 Jul 2011
While its mammoth length will automatically deter some from Barry Lyndon's slow-moving tale, the film is more than deserving of your time. Stanley Kubrick once again shows himself to be a master of storytelling through every medium.
The screenplay is rich, at times humourous while at others quite moving, the pacing slow but purposeful, and the cast quite accomplished. However the film's biggest strength is undoubtedly its stunning cinematography.
Much has been written about Kubrick's painstaking efforts to use no artificial lighting, developing new techniques in doing so, his efforts were rewarded with one of the most beautiful movies of its day; rarely have the emerald hills of Ireland shone so bright!
