Review of Barry Lyndon (1975) by Nadeem A — 20 Aug 2008
Adapted from Thackeray's famous Milesian fable, Kubrick's opulent costume drama is a masterful pictorial display of the virtues of cinematography itself set to a divine musical score. The dazzling optics irradiate the mark of a rare visual genius transforming otherwise quite dull and forgettable scenes into icons of cinematic poesis.
The gorgeous treatment of an otherwise uninspiring anti-hero forces us to apperceive, with ever growing alacrity, the moral disproportionality of false aspiration. Highly recommended.
