Paul Giamatti gives an astonishing (and really quite depressing) performance that I'm amazed hasn't been noticed by the academy, but that doesn't make Barney's Version a good movie. I wouldn't have gone to see it if I hadn't seen Giamatti's face plastered on the back of Empire, and to be honest, I probably could have done without it.
It's not bad but I did find it to be pretty damn boring - when Giamatti starts to go senile it gets a little more interesting but it's really not that great. Don't in any way tell yourself that I'm dissing the cast though, Dustin Hoffman is a genius and Paul Giamatti, as I say, is absolutely fantastic.
It's just..hmm..I don't know, I wasn't impressed - really quite disappointed instead.
