Review of Barney's Version (2010) by Jasen L — 26 Jul 2011
Barney's Version is real slice of life...no life that I am familiar with, but Paul Giamatti brings such character and depth to Barney you definitely feel a type of compassion for the character and his circumstances even though he's mostly just an asshole.
Dustin Hoffman is at his finest as Barney's aging "tell it like it is" dad and the rest of the supporting cast do a fine job as well. Again for the most part this movie is about watching Paul Giamatti do his thing.
A lot happens in Barney's Version, it's a good mix of funny moments, emotional moments and uncomfortable moments all set to a watchable pace. I love that it takes place in Montreal (my home town) which doesn't appear as itself in nearly enough movies these days.
