Review of Barney's Version (2010) by Joel A — 28 May 2012
There are some really great performances in this film, from hilarious Dustin Hoffman to the sublime Rosamund Pike and one of the most gifted actors of our generation: Paul Giamatti. I've always admired Giamatti's work, but he may have been miscast in this role as Barney.
Maybe I've watched too many (read: all of them, and many more than once) Mad Men episodes, but I would have bought a Jon Hamm/ Don Draper type of actor in this role more than I do Giamatti. Despite my reservations about the casting, I still really enjoyed Giamatti's work and the comedic turns of Hoffman and Minnie Driver, to name a few.
It's an interesting and imperfect epic of a man's life in Montreal, and his improbable quest for love, with some really great laughs along the way. Pike's performance is wonderful in that you really see why Barney was so taken with her.
