Review of Barfly (1987) by Zac T — 05 Aug 2010
An incredibly self-serving screenplay. All our hero does is be wasted and get in fights, he never writes - yet women, and publishers who think he's brilliant, can't seem to resist him. Even if he is too real for all that noise.
I've never liked Bukowski's persona (his writing, I do), and this movie seems to confirm my suspicions - that he actively crafts and maintains this image as a drunk because he's quite aware that it helps mythologize his work.
