Review of Barfi! (2012) by Rajesh M — 06 Oct 2012
For the casual movie viewer there is lot to like about this movie - picturesque locale, amazing sound track which ranks among the best I've heard in an Indian movie, camera work, and the charm of the movie itself. Director takes liberties with this one and boldly dwells in the unrealistic realm leaning on technical excellence to carry this movie through and it does work.
That said, there is a fine line between being inspired by a movie and copying scenes from a movie. This movie falls into the second category. The Oscars doesn't mean much, but considering the importance attached to it by mass populace, this shouldn't have been India's entry for the Oscar. We have more original content to be sent for such an event than a movie copies scene after scene from many international movies.
Most viewers probably aren't aware of the many movies that this one borrows from. Heck the masses may not even know who Charlie Chaplin is...Barfi! will bring to them hope. It will expose them to technical excellence that is a notch above anything they have seen.
4 stars for the movie...Less for the director.
