Review of Barbie (2023) by Rosamond_Watsic — 08 Aug 2023
I never expected to leave a film about a plastic Mattel Childs toy and leave with my inner child sobbing and healed. Themes of the effects of patriarchy and an existential crisis.
Growing up I was told by aged 14 to throw away my barbie because I was "too old" to keep them anymore. Ripping away a part of my adolescence as I became an older teenager. Watching this film rekindled and healed my inner teenager, knowing the part of myself and the part of themselves so many girls threw away to become adults. Abandoning childhood naivety as they realised the effects of the patriarchy. Barbie is so much more than a doll, she taught so many little girls they could be anything they wanted. I had so many barbies as a little girl and I loved them all. They still remain a pleasant memory of my bygone adolescence. This film brought so many girls together to just bond over what it means to be a woman. To nurture our inner children.
