Review of Barbie (2023) by 5-Amo — 23 Jul 2023
Some movies resort to simplistic or heavy-handed moralizing out of laziness or stupidity, but Barbie is not one of those movies. Greta Gerwig is smart, and if you’re willing to spend more than two seconds to think about the movie you’ll realize that it gives no easy answers to the political and moral questions it raises. Some people will find this unsatisfying, but only a moron would say that this makes the movie bad.
My theater was packed, and there was massive energy in the crowd. The movie was littered with hilarious jokes and the funniest musical numbers I’ve seen since Enchanted (2009). Both Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling deliver phenomenal performances. One of the best movies I’ve seen this year, can’t wait to watch it again.
