Review of Barbershop: The Next Cut (2016) by B B — 14 Jul 2016
Barbershop: The Next Cut is an entertaining film that succeeds more in drama than comedy. The whole cast was good. Some particular highlights were Ice Cube, Common, and Lamorne Morris. The whole ensemble has great chemistry.
They all work well together. There isn't a weak link in the bunch. The drama works pretty well. The issue of black violence is very topical today. The film handled the issue very well. Unfortunately, the comedy mostly failed.
None of the jokes really landed. I only laughed once or twice. There are too many pop culture references, from Bill Cosby to Solange Knowles. Overall, the film mostly succeeds with the drama. The drama lets the film be entertaining overall.
A solid drama, but a poor comedy.
