Review of Barbarella (1968) by Spalding S — 04 Feb 2010
Before Mrs. Ted Turner, the aerobics guru, feminist activist and Hanoi Jane, there was Barbarella. Wow! The Trip (Roger Corman) meet Plan 9 from Outer Space (Ed Wood). In this immensely silly story with low budget sets (shag rugs, feathers, inflated plastic bags) and costumes (more feather, leather, chains and plenty of boots), Barbarella, the kitten with the laser beam, must find the elusive Durand Durand and save the galaxy from his evil intentions while stopping for sexual encounters along the way with a cadre of bizarre characters.
How Fonda manages to smoothly deliver her lines attests to her acting chops.
