Review of Barbara the Fair with the Silken Hair (1970) by Richard D — 11 Feb 2017
A Czar takes a complete inventory of everything in his kingdom. Shortly after, he encounters a magical fellow who demands tribute. Thinking himself clever, he pledges anything in his kingdom that he doesn't personally know of .
.. only to return home and find out his wife is, unbeknownst to him, pregnant. He comes up with a plan to thwart the creature ... switch his son with the son of commoner, let this kid be taken in tribute, and then go get the right kid back.
Things do not work out that well. This is a pleasing little fairy tale film from Russia that's absolutely packed with wonderful, bizarre imagery achieved through some really good practical effects work.
