Review of Baran (2001) by Pradeep B — 15 Mar 2010
Winner for Best Film at the Montreal Film Festival. Romantic and poignant film about two young people from different countries and different cultures. The young man (Latif) is an Iranian. Rahmat (a girl in disguise) is an Afghanistan refugee who must pretend to be male so she can work and feed her extended family while her father recuperates from a job accident.
As the story develops Latif learns of the hardships Rahmat endures and does everything he can (including the sale of his ID papers) to help her. Watch for the burqa and lost shoe scene near the end of the movie.
Speaks volumes even though no words are exchanged.
