Review of Baraka (1992) by Nicki M — 15 Apr 2009
Visually powerful, and at times overwhelming. If one of the great master painters of the Renaissance were alive to make film, I imagine this might be close to the art they'd craft.
My only criticism is that at times it seems to overlay Western values on to the imagery. Perhaps unavoidable, but since parts of the film work so well without this judgment, I'm led to believe it was intentional.
