Review of Baraka (1992) by Georgios L — 18 Dec 2011
An attempt to write poetry without words, Baraka is only partially successful. The running time is one of the problems. It doesn't seem to long for a conventional film but for something like this it was impossible to sustain my attention for that long.
Saying that The Winged Migration though not identical to Baraka as it included some narration, had a similar running time but it never got boring. Maybe because The Winged Migration actually had a theme whereas the central theme on Baraka is quite elusive and it seems to be religion, faith and the deterioration of the human race from many different aspects.
Anyway this gets quite slow and incomprehensible at times and there are a couple of scenes that are just downright unsettling and creepy. Yes the photography is amazing but there are times where the whole thing will seem pretentious and pointless to you.
I also would like to know the locations of some of those lovely vistas as it would be great to visit them! Thank god for the credits at the end that list all the different locations.
