Review of Bandslam (2009) by Daniel S — 01 Sep 2010
I give this 4 stars because objectively I know its just a formulaic, albeit above par, teenage romantic comedy with a music theme, but goddamn if I didnt one of the strongest emotional reactions to a film recently, maybe not ever, I still cant put it all into words, but I suppose it comes from secret wish fulfillment of a high school life that I wish I could have experienced, but in reality didnt, (bear in mind I still had a lot of great times in high school) but what I responded to here was the unpopular kid who becomes involved with 2 attractive personable charming girls, something that definitely never happened to me in hs, u could say that this film isnt realistic in the characters of charlotte and sam, (especially charlotte) as at times they are almost too perfect or just a idealistic reproduction of what will, or the writers, desires, but I dont care, I just enjoyed seeing them all together, desiring them all to be happy together, charlotte, shes a popular girl whos hanging out with band geeks teaching will things he doesnt know about love and is just a fun person; sam, who started out kinda bitchy, soon showed a nice warm side and I loved seeing her singing at the end, there were times where I couldnt even watch cuz it was too painful cuz I cared so much about them, I swear if there was a sequel made to this, tho I kno there wont be as it flopped, I would see it in theaters without doubt, just to see these people again, I kno this all sounds crazy and whatnot, but practically all the user reviews on imdb and flixster have been positive so there has to be something about this film thats been able to touch home with people, who knows if ill feel this way in days to come about this, but as of right now thats the way it is.
