Review of Bandslam (2009) by Eric G — 20 Jun 2010
Despite the appearance of being some kind of School of Rock/High School Musical/Camp Rock hybrid/clone, Bandslam is, in fact, something unique and affecting...and an enigma of sorts. It starts out like a light 90's family, wish-fulfillment movie then takes a dark turn and suddenly the characters are much more complex.
..but then right when it starts to become more wish-fullfilly it goes back to realistic...and then ends on the most idealistic way yet. Obviously written by some hip/nerdy, Cameron Crowe-ish, New Yorker who's taste in music ranges from 70's indie rock, to contemporary musical theater, to ska cover bands.
The two lead girls are two of the coolest/most idealistic high school girls ever (and Hudgens is severely miscast)...and yet there is a real genuineness throughout, with believable drama and a smart/subtle sense of humor.
..and that is its most winning quality. A rare and excellent FAMILY (not "kid" not "teen") movie.
