Disney breaks a few rules, 1 of them is making musicals fun. For what it's worth Bandslam makes up for everything Disney has pumped out in the last decade that was below it's 'Magical standards'.
The family friendly appeal and misleading trailer set the standards at a low, and the cheesy poster advertisments gives you the impression of another REALLY bad teen movie, simalar to High School Musical 2 & 3.
