Review of Band Baaja Baaraat (2010) by Asif K — 11 Dec 2010
Releasing right in December, there couldn't be a better movie to mark the end of the year. Band Baaja Baarat is one of the most adorable and sweetest movies in the year. The movie is a story of of two people's venture into the extremely lucrative wedding planning business.
"Recession ho ya Inflation shaadi to log karte hi hai aur ye best business hai" I couldn't agree more :) An adorably entertaining film set in middle class Delhi gives the screenplay a real and believable feel.
The first half of the movie where both Bittoo (Ranveer) & Shruti (Anushka) go about establishing their wedding planning company and working hard to make the best weddings they can, is immensely enjoyable.
The conflict arises in the 2nd half where Shruti falls in love with Bittoo breaking her own set out idealistic principle of "Jisse vyapaar karo, usse kabhi na pyaar karo" (meaning: don't fall in love with the person you're doing business with).
This causes strain in the relationship and both break their partnership to start working alone. Soon, they realize that they were only great as a team and are disasters on an individual level. (A very important lesson to be learnt there! ).
The movie has a predictably happy ending :). The magic of Band Baaje Baarat lies in its simple and real treatment and its delightful lead characters and supporting cast. Ranveer Singh as Bittoo does a very competent acting job.
The star of the movie is "Anushka Sharma" (she betters her role in Rab ne Bana di jodi). A pure delight to watch, Anushka with her 1000 watt smile plays the character of the ambitious but straightforward Shruti Kakkar with a zeal and vulnerability, that you just fall in love with.
... I thought I would initially go with 4.5 stars out of 5 for this one but the sheer cuteness of the movie and the smile it brings about on one's face makes me give a 5 out of 5. Watch it :).
