Review of Bananas!* (2009) by Roxanne L — 06 Dec 2007
Pros: Woody Allen film!
Cons: Woody Allen film!
Woody Allen films are an acquired taste, much like Monty Python films. You either laugh, or you shrug. This was decent, but certainly not one of Allen's best films. It was about 50/50 on the laughs and shrugs. On the plus, it had some very funny spots, a cameo by a super-young Sly Stallone, and some camera work typical of Allen's early style. Book-ended by reporters from the Wide World of Sports along with some thoughtful lines embedded in the script brought a criticism about US foreign policy and the entertainment-a-lizing television has on what we see on TV. Yes, a laugh, but sometimes abortively pedantic, to quote Allen directly. I consider Allan's The Sleeper to be one of his grandest surreal comic achievements and this doesn't quite measure up to its stature.
