Review of Bananas (2006) by Alejandro E — 03 May 2009
The funny thing about this movie is that I can see the overall plot of it being a bit that Woody Allen does during his early stand-up. Theres a plot turn then funny stuff based from it, then a plot turn then funny stuff based from it, etc.
But getting beside that, Bananas is Woody Allen when he hadn't found the right balance between fantasy and reality. Like, Annie Hall and Manhattan do a great job bending that. In Bananas we see sports newscasters calling assassinations play-by-play, which is funny; and sex in the same way; but less funny. There's nothing wrong with something being unrealistic, but at times it felt like the movie was a little too chopped up into parts that strayed too much from the main thing.
Those are my only real beefs with this one though. Everything else was funny and entertaining. It left me with a satisfying feeling at the end; something I've never been able to explain but its how I know something is a good movie. Its not too memorable, but its leagues better than the average movie â??nowadays.â??
