Review of Bambi (2013) by Jacob M — 02 Jun 2013
In this Disney classic, we witness the birth of the deer Bambi, a deer whose father is the Great Prince of the forest and will soon take his place when he's older. As a child, Bambi enjoys his time with rabbit Thumper and skunk Flower. Bambi learns about the changes in season and enjoys the bond with his mother, until an unfortunate encounter with a hunter, which everyone probably knows about already. When Bambi becomes an adult, he finds love and encounters a pack of hunting dogs and a forest fire.
After Dumbo's success, Walt had enough money to make the film he wanted to make after Fantasia, which was this film. Although Bambi originally flopped due to the war going on at the time, like Fantasia, Bambi would later be viewed as a classic.
As for the film itself, Bambi is one of Disney's best. Returning to the realistic animation used in Fantasia, Walt provides us with beautiful landscapes of the forest and phenomenal designs of the deer and other creatures.
The story, based on the classic story by Felix Salter, is also great as well. Bambi is one of Disney's most touching stories, and its circle of life theme plus the moving death scene would later serve as the inspiration for The Lion King, a Disney film that tops Bambi, but I'll discuss that later.
The death of Bambi's mother remains one of Disney's saddest moments in film. When I first saw the film as a kid, I cried. I don't cry now, but the scene is still moving.
The score in this film is simply fantastic. It's sound, like Fantasia, sweeps us away into a world that will make us happy.
Bambi joins the list as one of the best Disney films, and today, it still remains a classic.
