The cuteness factor is a few notches beyond gag-inducing, but the narrative ambition is certainly worthy. You don't really see Disney attempting films like these anymore, not with this sort of epic grandeur. The contemporary spastic nature of Disney and most other animated children's films may say something about the generational effect increasing media access has had on ever shrinking attention spans.

Whether for that reason or not, Bambi doesn't really age very well in most respects, but it does justifiably hold on to its "classic" status on the merits of its truly masterful dramatic scenes. The death of Bambi's mother is one of the most important, and successful, sequences in film history.

This review of Bambi (1942) was written by on 27 Dec 2010.

Bambi has generally received very positive reviews.
