Review of Bambi (1942) by Thomas P — 07 Apr 2011
I'm not scared to admit it, but this was a spectacle animated wonder that shows nature the true Disney way. Bambi may not be my highest rated Disney animated film, nor favourite, but I really enjoyed h characters, animation and story. Terrific animation, wonderful story of beauty and nature.
The animation I must say was pretty impressive for the time, and it must have been nice to see new animation techniques being used at the time. One of the final scenes includes the forest burning, and it looks marvellous, which shows that Disney had some of the best animators around. I really like the animation style of this one. The colours where vibrant, the characters where very alive and as I said, some of the visual effects are impressive.
For those who do not know the story, It follows the little deer Bambi, who is born in a forest. Bambi explores the forest and walks on his legs for the first time. Now this is probably no spoiler but- near the middle of the film, hunter's enter the forest and Bambi's mother is shot. The rest of the story from there basically follows Bambi growing up with the rest of the forest creatures.
One thing I didn't like in the film is how right after Bambi'smother is shot, the film suddenly switches to a happy and bright song. It is far too sudden after something so gruesome happening. But you can ignore that. Bambi shows nature beautifully and the character himself is very innocent. There is a great cast of characters, including his best friend, Thumper the Rabbit. I ws surprised in the film actually. The character Flower I always thought was a female. After the fade into Bambi being grown up, Flower has a male voice. But that's just me.
Bambi is a highly enjoyable Disney classic, but not the best. With a duration spanning just over an hour, it is a short and filling animated feature from the masters of animation.
