Review of Ballast (2008) by Kris F — 06 May 2010
A major disappointment of a film, I had waited for a year to finally see this and now I'm just dumbstruck by the fact that it had no effect on me whatsoever. The cinematography was beautiful, but the pacing of the film and the acting were not up to par.
Other than the astounding performance from Tarra Riggs, the other performers were lackluster and without conviction. Director Lance Hammer seemed to be going for a Bergman-esque, almost poetic tone but what he ended up with was a meandering and dull, albeit beautifully photographed, film.
It had the potential to really be something special but that opportunity was missed. It's obvious Hammer has talent, but he really needs a solid script when working with nonprofessional actors - unless they're all named Tarra Riggs, I'd love to see her in something else, hopefully something better.
