Review of Ballad of a Soldier (1959) by Tanner A — 09 Jan 2013
Set in WWII in the Russian front, a young Russian soldier who becomes a reluctant hero is granted a six day leave to visit his mother. But on the journey there he encounters little odd adventures and a romance with a homeless girl.
This film is a masterpiece of photography, cinematography and stylistically outstanding editing ; its technical value is remarkable, but does not undervalue the incredible poetry and humanity with which Chukhrai illustrates the hardships of war.
