Review of Balibo (2009) by Mz.gie G — 20 Dec 2009
Powerful if flawed. The murder sequences of the Balibo 5 and Roger East are starkly harrowing but the intercutting between the two timelines didn't entirely work for mine - tended to dilute both strands, each of which was a compelling story in its own right.
The framing device felt a little cute but they ultimately get away with it. LaPaglia is terrific and I was more invested in his journey (and relationship with Horta). Shines a spotlight on two separate war crimes committed against Australians (and those against the East Timorese people) without being didactic.
