Review of Balibo (2009) by Niklas S — 27 Dec 2009
If I were to offer a one line review of Balibo, it would be that it rewards those with patience.
It is a slow, brooding film (too slow for many I am sure) that upon its conclusion leaves one with a much deeper understanding of the Timorese people.
For any Australian who cares about the Indonesian occupation of East Timor this is worth watching. For those who don't, it ought to be compulsory viewing.
The naivety of the journalists is laid bare; the ruthlessness of the Indonesian military more so. Unfortunately the complicity of the Whitlam Government is too well hidden in what is otherwise an excellent narrative (notwithstanding its to-and-fro nature which hampers the developing tension).
Anthony LaPaglia is fantastic as Roger East and Guatemalan born Oscar Isaac puts in a truly believable performance as Jose Ramos-Horta.
One major criticism is that I'm not a fan of the "handy cam" style of cinematography at all, even if in this context it works.
