Review of Baghead (2008) by Martin S — 01 Jan 2009
Baghead is what's being called in this day and age "true indie," as in independent films that never end up tied to major studios like Paramount Vantage and the like, and the results are rather ho-hum at best.
Lots of the comedy falls flat, but in the same regard the scares are ridiculously well-timed. The concept is great but it drags often and some of the performances leave something to be desired. And yet I applauded Baghead for trying to examine genre expectations, sometimes tearing them apart while others being painfully obvious.
Also, I'm not sure when the word "mumblecore" started referring to improvisational indie films, but it's one of the most worthless vocab amalgams to appear in recent memory.
