Review of Bad Words (2013) by Amilcar A — 04 Apr 2014
Bromance movies have taken every possible turn. Adults, teenagers, old people, teddy bears...you name it. All that was missing was a dysfunctional adult and a little kid of Indian heritage.
Obviously, and to perpetuate the stereotypes, the kid was a brilliant, son of a doctor competing in the national spelling bee.
The fundamentals of the story are really not that relevant (it turns out to be a pretty sappy film). What matters are the genuine and over the top exchanges between Jason Bateman and the child. No punches are held back, there's plenty of stereotyping, mild racism and underage drinking.
Eventually the movie fizzles and the story just gets lame but for a while, it's just plain funny.
Bateman also keeps the movie at a very manageable 90 minutes so there's no excess and the inevitable 30 minutes of filler space.
Not great but still funny.
