Review of Bad Times at the El Royale (2018) by Hardy C — 18 Oct 2018
Bad times was great times. The theme is everything you want from a classic American setting like this, coupled with a perfect mixture of 60's music and crisp silence and scene noise which builds suspense throughout the film's mysterious plot line.
When things started to ramp up after a brilliant 3/4's of the film we're side-struck by a nihilistic cult plot which takes the film and turns it on its head - something I found abrupt but interesting. Left me disappointed that the story of the 'El Royal' took a back seat to the interjecting cult plot. All is not lost, Chris Hemsworth as Billy Lee the cult leader maintains tension and plays the part great.
Great film - would have loved the classic theme to follow through to form some kind of conclusion but the unexpected turn maintains the tension and has you leaving the film thinking about it for days.
