Review of Bad Times at the El Royale (2018) by Jay S — 12 Oct 2018
Bad Times at the El Royale is a complicated film to discuss. It's a subverting film that tries to have a massive amount of allegories and social subtext and it mostly works very well. The production design of this hotel and the cinematography are gorgeous.
The biggest issue I think I have is the storytelling, specifically in the second act. The story becomes nonlinear at a point and begins to wear on the pacing a bit for a story that otherwise would've been perfectly fine as a linear narrative.
It's still hard to say that this film isn't a very enjoyable subverting ride with excellent performances, some great character depth, and a very sleek old fashioned fun film at the movies. It just had a little more potential.
