Review of Bad Times at the El Royale (2018) by Ray H — 20 Oct 2018
Bad Times At The El Royale boasts an excellent cast, each of whom have their own moments, but the film is let down by the use of a difficult way to tell the story. Set in the late 60s in a hotel which is split by the California and Nevada border, a priest, a singer, a vacuum salesman and a young lady seemingly on the run each check in with their own agendas.
The hotel is run by a young clerk seemingly out of his depth. But is all what it seems? Jeff Bridges is excellent as Father Flynn, as is Lewis Pullman as the clerk Miles. But each cast member has a highlight or two.
Chris Hemsworth's role is a bit of a scene stealer. Without going into spoiler territory, the flaw of its narrative style brings it undone. At one point you can be invested in what's going on then it gets lost.
It's a shame because the film would've been so much better if it wasn't so long and the end doesn't reward your patience to any great satisfaction.
