Review of Bad Times at the El Royale (2018) by Eryn B — 15 Oct 2018
This Quentin Tarantino-esque film is engaging from start to finish. It deals with themes that the easily offended had best avoid but if you are comfortable with Tarantino then you'll find the 'grotesque' moments pretty mild, especially as they are implied and talked about rather than seen.
The interesting narrative structure allows you to glimpse the world from multiple viewpoints which click together nicely. The set design and costuming make for immersive viewing and the acting is solid, with the exception of Hemsworth who doesn't have the acting strength for such a subtly sinister role.
While the film ends with a decent bang and satisfies enough to alleviate frustration, not all questions are answered which causes a bit of a frown - mostly because the first half of the movie sets up some genuinely creepy and interesting premises that are under-explored and are instead used to progress a less interesting plot.
This, however, is not enough to bypass the movie. Expect a good time.
