Nobody could have predicted that Peter Jackson would one day direct the most expensive film trilogy in history, and on watching this film it's easy to see why. Filmed in his home town on a shoestring budget, this deliberately outrageous and bloody gorefest is designed to offend and sicken in equal measure.

Jackson initially appears to be after your stomach, not your heart or mind. However, this is part of the movie's charm. There is a real sense of this film being a labour of love; you can easily envisage Jackson and the rest of the cast/crew sitting around and discussing how disgusting they can make the next sequence of the movie.

Unlike certain modern horror movies, the violence here is far from cynical; it is designed to pull your leg, Jackson has made the film so that the audience are in on the joke. The film is a triumph because it successfully fuses gross-out moments and comedy, a feat that is almost impossibly difficult to attain.
