Review of Bad Taste (1987) by Justin B — 09 Oct 2012
Although it's know as a horror comedy, it's not scary at all. The only horror element is the gore. The whole film is just a gory sci-fi action comedy about cannibalism.
It was originally meant to be a 15 minute short but after 4 years of shooting, it became a 90 feature.
Peter Jackson serves as Director, writer, producer, co-editor, camera operator, creator of the special effects, alien masks and guns and actor. Almost like Robert Rodriguez style filmmaking. A "do it yourself" deal. Only without cramming tons of CG in our faces.
The gross out factor, I'd give a 3 out 5 for the scene where the aliens are drinking the vomit. Enough to cause the whole cinema to go "UGHHHHHHHH!!!" Another example is Derek's brain falling out and he's putting it back in.
The gore is very fake. It was the type of stuff you'd get in a butcher's like turkey or chicken, etc.
Because it was shot in 4 years, the actors get older and weigh more or weigh less. There's a great scene where Derek the scientist is fighting Robert the alien and both are played by Peter Jackson. The scene is very convincing and I forget Peter is playing both characters.
The reason I'm only giving this a 4 star, is that it does get slow and drags a bit. Braindead has a more faster pace.
Overall, Jackson fans or gore fans will enjoy this. It's nice to see the movie that got Peter's career started. If you're expecting the seriousness of his later films, look elsewhere.
