Review of Bad Santa 2 (2016) by Lucas Y — 27 Feb 2017
Watched 2 sequels this weekend. One was great. The other was Bad Santa 2. The films' biggest problem is the weak, unoriginal script. It's basically the same story as the first. The absence of Terry Zwigoff is noticeable.
He's one of the best at making audiences sympathize with self loathing characters. That's what made the original Bad Santa so great. In this, Billy Bob is just an asshole. He has some good moments and flashes of original Willie, but altogether a definite downgrade.
Same goes for every other character. The cute, innocent, C-student Thurman Murman from the original is now cringe worthy, hopeless young adult. The addition of Kathy Bates was terrible. After the 14th time she called Billy Bob "shit stick" I decided to never watch another one of her movies again, with the exception of Misery.
Overall, I'm very surprised BBT would agree to make this if he actually pre-read the script. Desperate, lazy cash grab that fails miserably.
