Review of Bad News Bears (2005) by Mitchell Y — 16 Jul 2007
Billy Bob Thorton carries this film, which is pretty uneven for a comedy. Richard Linklater tries to bring in his sardonic, off-beat humor from his Dazed and Confused Days, but the problem is he's directing a PG-13 film, so the range of his style of humor feels limited.
The film seems to want to be meaner than it actually is; Billy Bob Thorton puts in a film-carrying performance, but the other characters are just exaggerated stereotypes (the handicapped kid, the black kid, etc.
) that the movie tries to poke fun at at every opportunity, but that rarely works. It's missing the heart the original had and the great Walter Matthau.
