Review of Bad Lieutenant (1992) by Elliot M — 06 Jun 2007
A bit mannered, I think, but still interesting, and goes some way to explaining why Keitel is adored in France. Am I alone in thinking that this is actually one of the most deeply Christian pieces of film-making ever to emerge from the USA? Not in the sense of decent folk with neat lawns and acceptable opinions they read in a newspaper, but in the manic biblical sense.
Keitel's Bad Cop strands himself in a moral wilderness only to emerge on the other side with an epiphany regarding the purpose of compassion and the possibility of redemption, giving up his own life at the end.
That's what I think anyway, but I will understand if everyone else prefers to concentrate on the scene where Keitel wanks off at schoolgirls.
