Review of Bad Lieutenant (1992) by Tony P — 22 Mar 2008
A dark and hypnotic character study. It's repulsive and disturbing, but with a cloud of black comedy hanging over it. Keitel seemingly controls the entire film. The camera just follows him hulking around, tripping balls in various dark corners of NYC.
The story speaks enormously to the ideas of redemption and self-sacrifice. The scene in the church where Keitel talks to Jesus is so powerful, and a great demonstration of focus in performance. It's rich, devilish, depressing, and often hysterical.
I love this movie.
